Chapter 15 Flashcards
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p159
On many incidents what position can be the linchpin of success, preventing water supply errors that allow fires to grow?
The Backup position
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p159
What position is the backbone the operation?
The backup, where the nozzle is the eyes and the officer is the brain.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p160
What is needed from a good back up?
anticipate needs and exhaust themselves to make sure there is ample supply of hose and support to apply water to fire.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p160
What is the backup firefighters job with respect to kinks?
Back up FFer job starts at engine and ends at the last obstacle.
- ensure the reconnected line clears the hosebed, preventing the greatest kink
- ensure nozzle FFer doesn’t release shoulder load too early when resistance that is not a fully extended hoseline is felt.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p161
How does the backup FFer ensure the shortest most efficient path of the hoseline?
As he follows the nozzle FFer he is able to correct/get around obstacles to ensure the hoselay has the most efficient route possible… more length.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p161
How does the backup FFer eliminate turns and excessive bundles of hose?
Backup is responsible for tracking the path of the nozzle FFer to negate hazards that would cause to pull short. If needed stop nozzle FFer, to prevent pulling tight on an obstacle.
Also must deal with extra hose if overestimation is made (alley stretch) ensure kink free charge.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p161
What is an alley stretch?
When the nozzle FFer has 100 ft on his shoulder, the back up FFer grabs the coupling before nozzle FFer drops the load and pulls it back in the direction you came. This creates a large S pattern.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p161
How does the backup firefighter determine the number of additional Backup FFers needed?
The ultimate Backup must be ____and not merely ____ as it is too late to save an ineffective firefight when you are hoping to catch up.
By anticipating the number of turns based on general building types and their anticipated layout. The number of anticipated turns will be total number of backup FFers needed. We live in these houses, well they do.
proactive / reactive
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p161-162 (test question)
What is having the correct body position on a turn?
When a turn is expected the Backup FFer must get into a crouched or kneeling position in which the body weight is centered. This allows the FFer to utilize leverage and strength to make the push around the corner. The backup firefighter must be on the outside of the hose.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p161
How does the backup firefighter facilitate the pace of fire attack?
The backup facilitates attack by always having enough hose ready so when the nozzle FFer and the Officer advance the line they always have slack to move forward. At the same time this means not pushing the team, the goal is to stage hose in S formation down halls or in room so attack can always proceed.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p163
Why do the nozzle FFer and the officer need to rely on the backup FFer to watch conditions they put water on the seat of the fire?
Because they their vision is clouded by the steam conversion that occurs during fire attack. The backup FFer has the best view of conditions.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p163. (Test Question)
What is the position that Backup FFers must use to move in IDLH conditions?
FFers should maintain a low position by being in a duckwalk or offensive shuffle. Allows FFer to move and stay low but also watch for change in conditions.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p162
how can a Backup know if a line is flowing, advancing, or static?
by just keeping a hand on the hoseline.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p 163
how can the backup give the nozzle FFer unimpeded range?
by applying the correct amount of force when backing up the nozzle.
Chapter 15: Backup is not a Direction of Travel, It’s a Position, p164 (test question)
How much nozzle reaction can one firefighter handle?
60-70 lbs of force, when the 70 pound mark is crossed then a static object or FFer is needed.
