Chapter 14 Flashcards
149
How can you prevent over looking a task or forgetting a tool?
predetermined assignments
150
How do riding assignments help?
they provide guidance on the task to be completed and the manner in which they will be executed.
150
The design and implementation of riding assignments offer several notable benefits, such as: (2)
- Accountability- allows officer to know where FFers are and what they are doing. If these tactics are department wide then other companies will know this information as well.
- Foundation for training- learning how and what is expected for each position at various incident types.
151
How many firefighters must you have to successfully and safely preform engine company operations on the fire ground, at the minimum?
Three FFers
151
What are the essential positions on the engine?
The Chauffeur-can set pump and help elsewhere
Engine Officer- Boss, may fill more than one role (backup)
Nozzle operator-
151
What is the benefit of having a well trained and professional chauffeur?
That they can supplement other positions later in the incident.
152
Which position can have the greatest impact, negative or positive on the fireground?
The nozzle operator
152
If the officer has done a good job and the nozzle operator is prepared, what should the nozzle operator be able to do with confirmation by the officer? (4)
Select the hose line
Recognize the fire conditions
Extent of the fire
Layout of the structure.
152
Once the line is deployed to the point of entry what should the nozzle operator do? (8)
- Assess the fire conditions and acknowledge any changes.
- Quickly assess the layout as front door is forced, peek low for fire location, obstacles
- Assume firefighting position (leg in front, head up facing obstacle, keeping body low)
- Maintain enough hose in front to be able to direct stream in arc of 180 degrees
- Push-in, advance line
- Proper deployment means not ignoring the line behind you, must pause around corner to advance (pull) line
- Know your nozzle, their capabilities and limitations
- Be creative in finding a backup person, direct the reaction pressure into the ground, or any static obstacle such as a sofa or wall corner.
152
What does the correct firefighter position advantages? (4)
- Constantly probing for obstacles or lack of floor with your forward foot.
- Monitor fire conditions front and above you
- You can sit back onto your back leg to stop forward momentum.
- You can direct your nozzle reaction into the ground
153
What is the correct amount of hose to keep in front of you as you advance the line?
2 feet, allows your to quickly drop and direct nozzle reaction into the ground or object.
153
When pausing to advance line what is a tactic the nozzle offer may use to continue attack?
Use the wall or static piece of large furniture to serve as back up ffer while more hose is being advanced
154
What are the eventual positions that can be filled later by incoming units?
Backup, control
154
A person who is correctly filling the backup position may never see fire? T/F
T
154
How many people will preform the role of backup FFer?
At a fire depending on the structure you could have 3-5 backup FFers or more.
154
What are the responsibilities of the backup position? (4)
Backup firefighter must at minimum:
- Eliminate kinks
- Stay one obstacle (corner) back from the nozzle operator, ensures smooth flow around a pinch point
- Maintain 10’ of hose to assist in the final push- snake , form loop, just make sure line is not taut
- Monitor conditions in front and in back, in better position to observe condition than officer/nozzle FFer
155
What is the greatest hindrance to successful engine company operations?
overcrowding in the fire room.
155
Control
Single person who can quickly assess and estimate the proper stretch of hose to reach the fire. Also bouncer of fire compartment.
155
What is the primary job for any later arriving engine company?
to ensure that the first line is in place and advancing to the fire. No need for two short lines. If first line is on place then a second can be placed with more people on pinch points.
155
By building a clear set of goals and expectations for each position you can create ….
foundation for a training program that works to accomplish the primary goal of getting water on the fire.
