Ch 9: Joints Flashcards
Three categories of joints
-fibrous joints
– Cartilaginous joints
– Synovial joints
Fibrous joints
Synarthroses
-Not moveable (skull)
Cartilaginous joints
Amphiarthroses
-Slightly moveable (Pelvic joint, ribs)
Synovial joints
Diarthroses
-Freely moveable (elbows and stuff)
-Contains synovial fluid
Parts of synovial joints
– Joint capsule
– synovial membrane
– joint cavity
– articular cartilage
– ligaments
Joint capsule
Connective tissue that extends from the periosteum of each of the articulating bones that encloses the joint cavity
Synovial membrane
The moist slippery membrane lines the inside of the joint capsule where it secretes synovial fluid
Joint cavity
The small space between the bones that contains synovial fluid
Articular cartilage
A thin layer of hyaline cartilage that covers the bone surfaces
Ligaments
Tough cords of connective tissue help bind the bones together
Six types of synovial joints
-Ball and socket
– pivot
– hinge
– condyloid
– saddle
– gliding
Examples of ball and socket joints
Hips and shoulder
Example of pivot joints
Atlas and axis
Example of hinge joint
Elbow
Example of condyloid joint
Radius and carpal bones as well as the joints at the base of the fingers
