Ch 12: Sensory System Flashcards
Five types of receptors
-Chemoreceptors
-Mechanoreceptors
-Thermoreceptors
-Nociceptors
-Photoreceptors
Chemoreceptors
React to various chemicals including odours and tastes
Mechanoreceptors
Respond to mechanical stimulation such as pressure, stretch, or vibration
Thermoreceptors
Activated by a change in temperature
Nociceptors
Pain, trauma, heat, chemicals, or a lack of oxygen
Photoreceptors
Found only in the eyes, these respond to light
Referred pain
Pain in a deep organ manifesting from the bodys surface
-Sensory fibres from an organ and those from an area of skin use the same pathway
Cranial nerves involved in gustation
-Facial nerve (VII)
-Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
-Vagus nerve (X)
Where are taste buds
Around the papillae on the tongue
Cranial nerves involved in olfaction
Olfactory nerve (I)
Auricle (pinna)
The visible part of the outer ear
Three auditory bones
-Malleus
-Incus
-Stapes
Tube that runs from the middle ear to the nasopharynx
Eustachian tube
Oval window
Connected to the stapes, contains perilymph that transports sound movement
Round window
Located at the end of the cochlea it dissipates remaining sound waves
