Ch 10: All Of The Muscles Flashcards
Frontalis
-Located front of the forehead
-Raises the eyebrows
Orbicularis oculi
-Located around the eye
-Closes the eye when blinking squinting
Zygomaticus
-Located over the cheeks and up toward the eyes
-Draws your mouth upwards when laughing
Orbicularis Oris
-Located around the mouth
-Closes the mouth and purses the lips
Buccinator
-Located on the side of the mouth
-Assists in smiling and blowing as well as chewing
Temporalis
Located above the ear on the side of the head
-Aids in closing the jaw
Masseter
Located at the jaw
-Closes the jaw
Sternocleidomastoid
Located laterally on the neck
-Flexes the head downward
Trapezius (head)
Located on shoulder and upper neck
-Extends the head and flexes to one side also elevates the shoulder
External intercostals
Superficially between the ribs
-Elevate the ribs during inspiration
Internal intercostals
Lie deeper than the external intercostals
-Depress the ribs during forced exhalation
Diaphragm
Located inferior to the lungs inside the rib cage
-Enlarges the thorax to trigger inspiration
Rectus abdominis
Aaaaaaaaaaabs
-Flexes the lumbar region of the spinal column to cause bending at the waist
Transverse abdominal
To the side of the abdominal muscles under the external oblique
-Compresses the contents of the abdomen
Internal oblique
Underneath the external oblique
-Stabilizes the spine and permits rotation at the waist
External oblique
Outermost abdominal muscle
-Stabilizes the spine and aids in forceful expiration
Linea Alba
White line in the centre of the abs
-Band of connective tissue
Deltoid
On the shoulder
Abducts flexes and rotates the arm involved in swinging the arm
Pectoralis major
On the chest
Flexes and adducts the arm such as when climbing or hugging
Serratus anterior
Lateral to the abs
Drives all forward reaching and pushing movements pulls the shoulder down and forward
Trapezius
Posterior neck portion
Raises and lowers the shoulders stabilizes the scapula during arm movements
Latissimus dorsi
Lateral lower back
Adducts the humerus
-Extends the upper arm backward
Four muscles of the rotator cuff
-supraspinatus
-infraspinatus
-teres minor
-subscapularis
Brachialis
Located at the bicep
The prime mover When flexing the forearm
Biceps brachii
Assists the brachialis when flexing before also supinates the forearm
Triceps brachii
The prime mover when extending the forearm
Brachioradialis
Helps the brachialis and the biceps brachii flex the forearm
Pronator muscles
Allow the arm to pronate (Palms down)

Supinator muscle
Used with the biceps brachii to allow supination (Palms up)
Iliapsosas
-Flexes the thigh
-Iliacus
-Psosas major
Sartorius
Across the front of the thigh
Aids in flexion of the hip and knee and abducts and laterally rotates the thigh
Adductor muscles
Rotate and draw the thigh in towards the body
-Adductor Magnus
-Adductor brevis
-Adductor longus
-gracilis
Quadriceps femoris
-The most powerful muscle in the body it is the prime mover for knee extension
-rectus femoris
-vastus lateralis
-vastus medialis
-vastus intermedius
Gluteus medius
-Attached to the iliac crest
-Abducts and rotates the thigh outward

Gluteus maximus
It’s your butt
The bulkiest muscle in the body. produces the backswing of the leg
Gluteus minimus
Beneath the other two gluteal muscles
Hamstring group
Extend the thigh at the hip, flex the knee, and rotate the leg
-Biceps femoris
-semitendinosus
-semimembranosus
Gastrocnemius
Calf muscle
partially responsible for plantar flexion
Soleus
Causes plantar flexion of the foot
Calcaneal tendon
Achilles tendon
Tibialis anterior
Keeps the toes from dragging the ground when walking
Extensor digitorum longus
Extends the toes and turns the foot outward
