Ch 23: Reproductive Systems Flashcards
Primary sex organs
-Gonads
-testes
-ovaries
-Produce gametes
Secondary sex organs
-All other organs necessary for reproduction
-Ducts, glands, penis
-Womb, cervix, anything concerned with growing egg
Spermatic cord
-Extends from the abdomen to each testicle
-Contains vas deferens
Median septum
Divides the scrotum
Cremaster muscle
Surrounds the spermatic cord and testes
Lobules
-Each testy contains more than 200
-Contain one to three seminiferous tubules where sperm are produced
Rete testis
A network of vessels that leads away from the seminiferous tubules
Efferent ductules
Conduct immature sperm away from the testes to the epididymis
Epididymis
-Attached to posterior side of the testes
-Sperm move from the head of the epididymis to the tail, maturing as they go
-Sperm are stored in the tail
-Sperm remain fertile 40 to 60 days
Vas deferens
Tube where sperm leave the tale of the epididymis
Route of sperm from testes to seminal vesicle
-Vas deferens
-Spermatic cord
-Inguinal canal
-Pelvic cavity
-Over the ureter and a long posterior bladder wall
Seminal vesicles
Secretes thick yellowy fluid Which comprises 60% of semen
Prostate gland
Secretes a thin milky alkaline fluid. Comprises about 30% of semen
Cowper’s glands
Secrete in clear fluid for lubricant
Acrosome
Tops the head of the sperm. Contains enzymes to penetrate egg
Sperm nucleus
Contained in the head of the sperm, it’s packed with genetic material
What does the middle piece of spermatozoa contain
Lots of mitochondria that supply the spermatozoa with energy to move
