saccular aneurysm
a sac-like bulge on one side
aneurysm
a widening; bulging of the heart wall, aorta or artery
fusiform aneurysm
a spindle-shaped bulge
dissecting aneurysm
a split or tear in the vessel wall
angina pectoris
chest pain caused by temporary loss of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle (angina = to choke)
arteriosclerosis
thickening; hardening of the arterial walls
atherosclerosis
a form of arteriosclerosis caused by the buildup of fatty substances that harden within the walls of the arteries
atheromatous plaque
a swollen area within the lining of an artery caused by the buildup of lipids
claudication
to limp; pain in a limb while walking caused by inadequate blood supply
constriction
compression of a part that causes narrowing (stenosis)
diaphoresis
profuse sweating
embolus
a clot (e.g., air, fat, or foreign object) in the bloodstream that obstructs the flow of blood when it lodges (embolus = a stopper)
heart murmur
an abnormal heart sound produced by defects in the chambers or valves
infarct
to stuff; a localized area of necrosis caused by ischemia resulting from occlusion of a blood vessel
ischemia
to hold back blood; decreased blood flow caused by constriction or occlusion of a blood vessel
