abortion (AB)
expulsion of the products of conception before the fetus is viable
spontaneous abortion (SAB)
miscarriage
habitual abortion
spontaneous abortions in 3 or more consecutive pregnancies
incomplete abortion
incomplete expulsion of the products of conception
missed abortion
death of a fetus or embryo within the uterus that is not natually expelled after death
threatened abortion
bleeding with the threat of miscarriage
cephlopelvic disproportion (CPD)
condition preventing normal delivery; either the baby’s head is too large or the birth canal is too small
eclampsia; pregnancy-induced hypertension
true toxemia of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, albuminuria, edema of the legs and feet, and puffiness of the face, without convulsion or coma
ectopic pregnancy
implantation of the fertilized egg outside of the uterine cavity, often in the tube or ovary
erythroblastosis fetalis
fetus with Rh+ blood and mother with Rh- blood; blood transfusion necessary to save the fetus
hyperemesis gravidarum
severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (emesis = vomit)
meconium aspiration
fetal aspiration of amniotic fluid containing meconium
placenta previa
displaced attachment of the placenta in the lower region of the uterine cavity
abrupto placentae
premature detachment of a normally situated placenta
