Atheroma Flashcards
Define atheroma
Build up of fatty material on the inside wall of an artery
Define atherosclerosis
The progressive narrowing and hardening within an artery potentially resulting in a complete blockage
What ares does atheroma affect?
Lower abdominal aorta, coronary arteries, popliteal arteries, internal carotid arteries, vessels of circle of willis
What causes atheroma?
Chronic injury to the endothelium resulting in chronic inflammation
What causes of injury are involved?
Hyperlipidaemia, disturbed flow, smoking, hypertension
What are the 5 stages of atheroma?
- Initial lesion
- Fatty streak lesions
- Intermediate lesion
- Atheroma lesion
- Fibroatheroma lesion
- Complicated lesion
What does atheroma lead to in each artery?
Coronary- heart attack/ischaemic heart disease
Aorta- aneurysm
Carotis- stroke
Do atherosclerotic plaques develop quickly or slowly?
Slowly
What may be the cause of acute symptoms?
Aneurysm & rupture Thrombosis Haematoma Embolisation Critical stenosis
