Arteries, veins and nerves Flashcards
What is the order of vessels from the heart?
Arteries, arterioles, capillary bed, venules, veins
What is it referred to when an artery, vein and nerves travel together?
A neurovascular bundle
What are the largest arteries and veins called in the human neck?
Internal jugular vein and common carotid artery
State the order of arteries running down the upper limb up until bifurcation
Subclavian artery, axillary artery, brachial artery
What does the brachial artery bifurcate into? Also state the names of the anastomoses branches
Bifurcates into the ulnar artery - anastomses is the superficial palmer arch
And the radial artery - anastomoses is the deep palmer arch
What is the purpose of anastomoses?
Allows for collateral circulation around a joint when it is flexed, or for continual blood supply if there is a blockage
What are the two types of veins and where are they found?
Deep veins - accompany arteries
Superficial veins - lie just beneath the skin in the superficial fascia. Drain into deep veins and are tributaries of deep veins
What methods prevent backflow in veins?
Valves, skeletal muscle pump, close relationship with pulsating arteries
What is the function of the lymph system?
passes excess extravascular fluid back into the circulatory system
What 2 branches is the nervous system split into and what are they made up of?
CNS - brain and spinal cord
PNS - spinal nerves (arise from spinal cord) and cranial nerves (arise from brain and brainstem)
What are the branches of the PNS and what are their roles?
Somatic = touch, pressure, pain, sensory. Made up of afferent and efferent neurones (sensory and motor)
Autonomic = made of parasympathetic and sympathetic, fight vs flight
