Aneurysm Flashcards
What is endovascular aneurysm repair?
stent inserted via peripheral artery
What are the risk factors for an AAA?
male, >65, smoking, hypertension, popliteal aneurysms
What is open repair of an AAA?
laparotomy - clamp aorta above aneurysm and iliacs below - dacron graft
Why is screening required?
may be asymptomatic
What is a saccular aneurysm?
sac coming off wall
What are the clinical features of a rupture?
sudden onset epigastric/central pain that may radiate to back, collapse
What are the symptoms of an AAA?
pain - may mimic renal colic, trashing - thrombosis break off and travel down legs
What imaging is used in AAA?
duplex ultrasound or CT scan
What is a true aneurysm?
all 3 layers of vessel walls intact - blood flow contained
What is a false/pseudoaneurysm?
breach in vessel wall - surround structures act as vessel wall
What is found on examination?
hypo/hypertensive, pulsatile expansible tender mass, transmitted pulse
What is an aneurysm?
dilation of a vessel by more than 50% of its normal diameter
When is intervention required in AAA?
> 5.5cm AP diameter or >0.5cm/6months expansion
What is a mycotic aneurysm?
infection weakens wall - all 3 layers involved
Who is screened?
males >65
