A2:Biological Aproach To Health Flashcards
What does biological approach mean in terms of health
Whether someone is healthy or unhealthy would be based on factors such as genetics hormones, neurotransmitters brain structure, et cetera
What is a neurotransmitter
Chemicals used to transmit messages from one brain cell to another across the synapse
Excitatory neurotransmitter
Increase brain activity and allow more signals to be sent around the brain
Inhibitory neurotransmitter
They decrease brain activity and have calming effects
What happens when neurotransmitters are imbalanced
Can cause health issues
Excitatory or inhibitory
Dopamine
Excitatory
Excitatory or inhibitory
Serotonin
inhibitory
Dopamine at the correct quanitity
Responsible for feelings of pleasure and reward and also involved with mood and decision-making
Too much dopamine
Linked to OCD this makes someone get a rush of pleasure from doing the compulsion and then carry on doing the compulsion
Too little dopamine
Link to symptoms of depression for example losing pleasure in activities they ones enjoyed
The correct amount of serotonin
Involved with emotions and mood and the sleep cycle, food, digestion, and pain relief
Too much GABA (main inhibitory neurotransmitter)
Leads to little brain activity which leads to hypersomnia (where u fall asleep often in the day)
Too little serotonin
Has been linked to depression as it plays a role in your mood
What is genetic predisposition
When one has certain genes which just make them more likely to develop a disorder but doesn’t always mean they are going to get the disorder just more likely
Examples of disorders that people can genetically predispose to
1) type 2 diabieties
2) depression
3) breast cancer
4)heart disease
5)sickle cell anaemia
