WHO definition of health
State of complete physical mental and social well-being and not mainly the absence of disease or infirmity
Biomedical definition of health
Physical/biological factors make health and it is the absence of disease
Biopsychosocial definition of health
Interaction of biological, psychological and social factors to enhance health and prevent disease
Health as a continuum
Health and ill health are too extreme with many in between states
Health
A positive state which we can face the challenges of life of fulfil potential this applies to our whole life and not just our physical state

What is Physiological addiction
Addiction of the body which means a person whose physiologically addicted will experience withdrawal and tolerance e.g. alcohol drug take
What is behavioural addiction?
When a person becomes addicted to behaviour such as gambling and shopping
What are Griffiths six components?
- Dependence/salience.
- Tolerance.
- Withdrawal.
- Relapse.
- Conflict.
- Mood alteration.
What is addiction
A mental health problem where someone takes a substance or engages in a behaviour that is pleasurable but then eventually becomes compulsive with negative consequences
What is dependence/salience?
Addictive behaviour becomes the most dominant thing in an individuals life
What is tolerance?
Reduction response to a drugs so the addict has to take more in order to gain the same effect
What is withdrawal?
Symptoms that develop when an addicted person stops using drugs
What is relapse?
Going back to addiction when you stopped for a period of time
What is conflict?
When 2 or more things have competing demand so it creates a clash
What is mood alteration?
A change in a persons emotional state caused by addictive drugs and behaviour
What is stress?
Emotional response to a situation of threat
What is a stressor
Any feature of the environment that causes a stress response
What is physical stress?
This is how the body physically responds to a stressor, e.g. increase heart rate or sweating
What is psychological stress?
The emotions you experience when stress occurs
What is a perceived ability to cope
How individual believes they are able to deal with a stressor this is seen by the perception of available resources to deal with stress
