6 Different Classes Of Enzymes Flashcards
What are the 6 different classes of enzymes and how to remember them?
LI’L HOT
Ligase Isomerase Lyase Hydrolase Oxidoreductase Transferase
Ligase
Joining 2 large biomolecules, often the same one
Often required ATP
ex: synthetase
Isomerase
Catalyzes the interconversion of isomers, including both constitutional isomers and stereoisomers
ex: fumarase, phosphohexose isomerase
- same chemical formula but different structure
Lyase
Cleavage of a single molecule into two products, or synthesis of small organic molecules
- Without the addition of water or transfer of electrons
- ex: synthase
Hydrolase
Breaking of a compound into two molecules using the addition of water
ex: lipases, pepsin, amylase, peptidase, nuclease (breaking biomolecules) (digestive enzymes)
Oxidoreductase
Oxidation and reduction reactions which involves transfer of electrons
-ex: NAD+ to NADP
Dehydrogenase, reductase, oxidase
Transferase
Movement of functions group from one molecule to another
ex: kinases, phosphatase
