5.4 Flashcards
What is fertility?
refers to the capacity to conceive and produce offspring
Infertility is the inability to conceive despite frequent coitus
What is sterility?
the inability to produce offspring.
What is Fecundability?
the probability of achieving a pregnancy in a single menstrual cycle.
What is Subfecundity?
a decrease in fecundability.
What is Time to pregnancy?
to the length of time, usually measured in months, that it takes a couple to conceive
What is the relationship between fertility and frequency of sex?
More sex = very nayce = better chance of preggerizing
What the relationship between age and fertility?
Age generally decreases fertility in both sexes
What is the relationship of fertility and tobacco use?
leads to subfertility, 13% rate. Leads to premature aging of the oocytes. As you can imagine, the more you smoke the worse it is for fertility. This also holds true for males, and smoking during pregnancy has bad effects on the offspring’s ability to reproduce as well.
What is the relationship of fertility and BMI?
for women it is clear that overweight and underweight women have subfertility risk, for males it is less clear. BMI is used to determine subfertility (over 27 and under 17 have subfertility risk). 18-25 is the best range to get pregnant. If you are obese and lose weight your fertility increases, yay.
What is the relationship of fertility and alcohol use?
for females it is actually less clear on how it affects fertility, but heavy drinkers are noted to achieve pregnancy in longer periods and are more prone to infertility. Male’s are much more pronounced, and heavy drinkers will have impotence, and impaired gonadal functions.
What is the relationship of fertility and diet?
Mediterranean diet seems to be the best, and overall healthy women have a much lower risk of infertility. Semen quality also improves with more healthy diets (shellfish, skimmed milk, tomatoes, lettuce)
What is the relationship of fertility and caffeine?
Leads to a small decrease in fertility in women, and in males there is no strong evidence.
What is the relationship of fertility and stress?
No clinical trials have proven, but there is small correlation between stress and infertility.
