5.10 Flashcards
What is the neural input for male sexual fxn?
impulses from erotic stimuli make neuronal signals proceed to the pelvic vascular bed, and fills the corpora cavernosa.
What is the vascular input for male sexual fxn?
the penis must be able to acquire blood from arterial sources and then limit venous outflow. NO stimulates erection by stimulating cGMP levels. When cGMP levels fall, you lose the erection.
What is the hormonal input for male sexual fxn?
testosterone plays the biggest role, deficiency is related to impotence, and is responsible for NO levels.
What are the causes of decreased libido in men?
Medication, alcoholism, fatigue, depression, drugs, relationship problems, testosterone deficiency, bad illnesses (systemic type)
What are some risk factors for ED?
Obesity, smoking, watching TV, all have higher risks for ED. Weight loss and exercise generally correspond to healthier sexual function. Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular disease, smoking, are all predictors of ED.
What is the correlation between cardiovascular disease and ED?
ED and CD (cardiovascular disease) share risk factors. They both increase risk/serve as warning for each other as well.
What are some drugs that can cause ED?
antidepressants, spironolactone, sympathetic blockers (clonidine, methyldopa), thiazide diuretics, ketoconazole, cimetidine. Nicotine, alcohol can disrupt sexual function.
What are some psychological factors that can cause ED?
depression, or the drugs that treat depression can cause ED
What are some neurological factors that can cause ED?
stroke, spinal cord, back injury, multiple sclerosis, dementia can cause ED, as well as pelvic trauma, prostatic surgery, and priapism.
Why can bicycling cause ED?
biking can actually cause ED due to possibly prolonged pressure on pudendal and/or cavernosal nerves. This is more for serious bicyclists.
What are some endocrine disorders that can cause ED?
testosterone deficiency affects mechanisms responsible for penile erections. Hyperprolactinemia, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, can also lead to ED.
What are ejaculatory disorders?
Ejaculatory disorders are a heterogeneous group of disorders that include premature, delayed, and retrograde ejaculation, and anorgasmia.
What is premature ejaculation?
rapid or early ejaculation that has 1. Brief ejaculatory latency, 2. Loss of control, 3. Psychological distress in patient or partner.
What is delayed ejaculation?
can range from delayal to inability to ejaculate.
What is retrograde ejaculation?
occurs often after surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia, semen is directed to urinary bladder instead.
