49% (holy crap)
What % of pregnancies in the US are terminated?
43%

the number of unintended pregnancies per hundred women per year
What are the most effective birth control methods?
Long-acting reversible contraception (intrauterine contraception, contraceptive implants) and sterilization
What are effective birth control methods?
Injectable contraceptives are the most effective in this tier of choices. OCs, the transdermal contraceptive system, and the vaginal ring are also associated with a very low pregnancy rate if they are taken consistently and correctly
What are the least effective birth control methods?
cluding diaphragm/cervical caps, condoms, spermicides, withdrawal (skeet skeet skeet), and periodic abstinence
What are IUD’s?
small T shaped device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy, they are LARC and are considered the most effective contraceptive
How do Cu IUD’s work?
release copper continuously into the uterine cavity; this interferes with sperm transport and prevents fertilization of ova
How do progestin-releasing IUD’s work?
inhibit sperm transport and fertilization of ova, and partially inhibit ovulation
Why are condoms ineffective?
Because people don’t know how to use them!
What type of lubes can’t you use with condoms?
Petroleum-based (it degrades the condom)
Why might women be less inclined to use diaphragms/cervical caps?
inserted prior to intercourse and must be left in for 6-8 hrs afterwards. This means woman may be less inclined to correctly use this method.
What do diaphragms/cervical caps NOT protect against?
STD’s
Why is withdrawal dumb?
20% of people still get pregnant because pre-cum still has sperm. #yolo
Why might women think that lactation is a sign of infertility?
during lactation prolactin levels are high which inhibit GRH from the hypothalamus which leads to SUBfertility but not INfertility
