5.1.5 Attribution Theory - Psychological factors that can influence an individual in physical activity Flashcards
Attribution
The reason given for the outcome of an event or performance
Locus of casualty
Whether it is in control (internal) or out of the performer
Stability Dimension
Whether the reason can change quickly (unstable or not (stable)
Weiner’s attribution model (Grid)
Internal stable - ability
Internal unstable - effort
External unstable - task difficulty
External unstable - luck
Self-serving bias
Using external and/or unstable reasons for losing. Maintains motivation and task persistence. eg blaming the loss on the ref
Internal Stable
Something within performers control that can change quickly (ability)
Internal unstable
Something in the performers control that can change in a short amount of time (effort)
External stable
Something out of the performers control that can’t change quickly (task difficulty)
External Unstable
Something out of the performers control that can change quickly
Attribution retraining
Changing the reasons given for success and failure. This can be changing internal factors to external factors or by highlighting previous successful performances
Learned helplessness
Using internal stable factors for losing, split into two categories, global and specific
Global / general learned helplessness
Not very specific eg Im not good at racket sports
Specific / situational learned helplessness
More adjusted to the individual
eg My match point serve is not good
