3.11 stem cell engineering Flashcards
Embryonic stem cells (ES) are what?
pluripotency
unlike zygote, embryonic stem cells are incapable of what?
generating a full organism
Where are embryonic stem cells taken from?
Blastocyst
Embryonic stem cells can generate what?
any part of the body
What is an issue with embryonic stem cells?
can give rise to disorganized growths called teratomas
What are 2 alternate ways of getting embryonic stem cells?
Somatic cell nuclear transfer and iPS cells.
What is SCeNT?
Combines cloning methods with embryonic stem cell tech to produce cells which are custom made for pt.
How does SCeNT work?
Nucleus taken from somatic cell of pt and injected into OOCYTE of a doner replacing the ooctye nucleus. Blastocyst generated from this hybrid oocyte and ES cells isolated
What are iPS cells?
adult cells converted into ESlike cells by maipulating gene expression directly
How can somatic cells be reprogrammed to form iPSC?
expose them to TF
What are some challenges to regenerative medicine and transplantation therapy?
Need lots of cells, delivery method. Proper integration into tissue or organ. Tissue rejection. Genetic aberrations
