3.10 specialized tissues, stem cells 2 Flashcards
What is the sensory epithelia?
specialized epithelium that covers the nose ears and eyes
Where is the sensory epithelia derived from?
ectoderm
What does the sensory epithelia do?
collect signals and deliver them to the CNS
How does the sensory epithelia collect signals and deliver them to the CNS?
Sensory cells act as transducers converting signals from environment into electrical form interpreted by the CNS.
What are 3 ex of sensory cells?
photoreceptors, auditory hair cells, olfactory sensory neurons
What end of sensory cells detects the external stimulus and converts it into a change in membrane potential?
Apical end
What end of sensory cells makes synapse with neurons that relay the sensory info to specific sites in the brain?
Basal end
What side of olfactory neurons face the extracellular environement and to the nerve?
Dendrite face the extra cellular environment and the axon face the nerve
How do olfactory receptors work?
Activated olfactory receptor activates Golf. Which activated Adenylate cyclase which produces cyclic AMP. Opening ion channels, resulting in influx of Na and Ca into the cell. Causes the neurons to depol and generate an AP.
What are glomeruli?
relay stations in the brain
True or False? All olfactory nuerons expressing same odorant receptor are located n dif places but axons converge on the same glomerulus
True
How long do olfactory neurons last?
month
How are olfactory neurons replaced?
Basal stem cells
What can stem cells in the brain produce?
Neurons and glial cells
Where are stem cells located in the brain?
Ventricles of forebrain and hippocampus
