We received an email this week from a listener who wants to know how we are doing with our New Year’s resolutions.
Hemos recibido un correo esta semana de un oyente que quiere saber qué tal llevamos nuestros buenos propósitos de año nuevo. (¿qué tal llevamos… ? = how we are doing with…?)

I have to admit that I haven’t quit smoking yet, but I smoke less.
Tengo que admitir que aún no he dejado de fumar, pero fumo menos. (aún no = not yet)
Quite good with respect to the gym and the pool, but I could go a little more ‘frequently’.
Bastante bien con lo del gimnasio y de la piscina, pero podría ir un poco más ‘frecuentemente’.

Well, this week we are going to talk a little about social networks.
Pues esta semana vamos a hablar un poco de las redes sociales.
Facebook is a social network that allows you to stay in touch with your friends through messages, photos and videos that you can share with your friends, or with your contacts.
Facebook es una red social que te permite estar en contacto con tus amigos a través de mensajes, fotos y videos que puedes compartir con tus amigos, o con tus contactos.
I like it up to a certain point.
Me gusta hasta cierto punto.
I like the fact that I can get in touch with my old friends that I haven’t seen for a long time.
Me gusta el hecho de que pueda ponerme en contacto con mis viejos amigos que no veo desde hace mucho tiempo.
By the way, I am in contact with my classmates from my childhood, and through Facebook, they have invited me to a dinner to meet again, to chat…
Por cierto, estoy en contacto con mis compañeros de clase de mi infancia, y a través de Facebook, me han invitado a una cena para reencontrarnos, para charlar.. (compañero = companion/ partner, but by itself can also mean classmate)

My friends are the people I work with, or are family, or are friends.
Mis amigos son las personas con las cuales trabajo, o son familiares, o son amigos.
However, on Facebook there are always many people who add you without even knowing you.
Sin embargo, en Facebook siempre hay mucha gente que te añade sin apenas conocerte. (Apenas = barely/hardly; añadir = to add)
I prefer Facebook to be something private between me and my friends.
Prefiero que Facebook sea algo privado entre mis amigos y yo.
Sometimes it’s hard to reject a person who wants to be your friend. There are people who have a lot of added contacts because they accept everyone they meet.
A veces cuesta rechazar a una persona que quiere ser tu amigo. Hay personas que tienen muchísimos contactos agregados porque aceptan a todo el mundo que conocen. (cuesta + infinitive = it is difficult to do something)
It’s the fact that you can waste a lot of time on Facebook, right?
Es el hecho de que puedes malgastar mucho tiempo en Facebook, ¿no?
I had to study for an exam and it didn’t matter: I was on Facebook!
Tenía que estudiar para un examen y no importaba: ¡yo estaba en Facebook!
And for me, the good thing about Twitter is that you can see what people are saying all over the world.
Y para mí, lo bueno de Twitter es que puedes ver lo que está diciendo la gente en todas partes del mundo.
Not long ago when the plane went down over the Hudson River, it took a while for the news to air the reports on what was happening.
Hace poco cuando cayó el avión sobre el río Hudson, las noticias tardaron un rato en emitir los reportajes sobre lo que estaba pasando. (Caer sobre = fall on/ fall over; tardar = to spend time/ to take; emitir = to broadcast)
He saw the plane go down.
él vio caer el avión.
He took a photo and posted it on Twitter.
Sacó una foto y la colgó en Twitter. (Colgar = to hang (suspend)/ to hang up (phone)/ to post (on social media)
I knew what had happened before the news came on TV.
Sabía lo que había pasado antes de que saliera en la televisión la noticia. (Saliera = imperfect subjunctive, triggered here by “antes de que” in the past; salir = to be made public/ to come out)
And this is a sample of citizen journalism.

Now it has become clear to me what Twitter is
