We are going to talk about a subject that interests us all at this time of the year: New Year’s resolutions for 2009.
Vamos a hablar de un tema que nos interesa a todos en esta época del año: los buenos propósitos para el 2009.
So can you give us an example of when it would be used?
Entonces, ¿nos puedes dar algún ejemplo de cuándo se utilizaría?
For example, we could use the phrase, “Mom, I’m going to get the keys.”
Por ejemplo, podríamos utilizar la frase, “Mamá, voy a por las llaves.”
In other words, if I say “I’m going to pick you up,” it means that I’m going to look for you, in a phrase like “I’m going to pick you up when you arrive at the airport.” (I’m going to get you when you arrive..)
Es decir si yo digo “voy a por ti,” significa que voy a buscarte a ti, en una frase como “voy a por ti cuando llegues al aeropuerto.”
If I say to you Mark, “Hey, I know what you told my sister, so get ready - I’m coming for you!”
Si yo te digo a ti Mark, “Oye, ya sé lo que le dijiste a mi hermana, así que ¡prepárate - voy a por ti!”
So in this case it would be a bit more like a threat.
Entonces en este caso sería un poco más como una amenaza.

On New Year’s Eve while we were preparing the champagne for a toast at midnight, I remembered that you and my other Spanish friends would be preparing the grapes to welcome 2009.
En Nochevieja mientras estábamos preparando el champán para hacer un brindis a medianoche, me acordé de que tú y mis otros amigos españoles estaríais preparando las uvas para darle la bienvenida a 2009.
You have to eat 12 grapes to the beat of the 12 chimes that indicate the start of the new year.
Hay que comerse 12 uvas al compás de las 12 campanadas que indican el inicio del año nuevo.
The first time I participated in this celebration was when I lived in Spain in Salamanca.
La primera vez que participé yo en esta celebración fue cuando vivía en España en Salamanca.
We were spending New Year’s Eve in Madrid and, as tradition dictates, we were at Puerta del Sol with a loads of locals (from Madrid) at midnight, underneath the clock.
Pasábamos nochevieja en Madrid y, como manda la tradición, estuvimos en la Puerta del Sol con un montón de madrileños a medianoche, debajo del reloj.
However, I didn’t know they had to be swallowed so when the chimes ended, I still had my mouth full of grapes like a hamster!
Sin embargo, no sabía que se tenían que tragar así que cuando terminaron las campanadas, ¡yo aún tenía la boca llena de uvas como un hámster! (aún = still/yet, indicating time; aun = even)
Even if it is only one piece but it has to be red.
Aunque sea solo una pieza pero tiene que ser rojo.
The truth is that that night in Madrid I no longer remember if I was wearing red underwear or not, and that’s it.
La verdad es que aquella noche en Madrid ya no me acuerdo si llevaba ropa interior roja o no, y ya está. (Ya no = not anymore/ no longer)
What are your resolutions for this year?
¿Cuáles son tus buenos propósitos para este año?
I’m a disaster in that sense.

But does that mean you’ve also gotten into the water?

I don’t know which but I would like to learn another language.

And the movie explains a difficult period in Spanish history and does so from a very human point of view.
Y la peli explica un periodo difícil de la historia española y lo hace desde un punto de vista muy humano.
