21. Urge Flow Flashcards
What is urge flow?
Urges go away and come back.
What is a complaint Sara often hears about urge flow?
“I processed it, and it went away, but then it came back, so I eventually gave in”
What should we recognize when urges come back?
Nothing has gone wrong.
Purpose of sitting with and processing our urges isn’t to…
Get them to go away (they will eventually go away though, just as the screaming toddler will eventually stop crying).
What is the purpose of processing urges?
To get really good at feeling the discomfort of the urge.
Trying to make urges go away is a form of…
Willpower.
What should your attitude toward the urge be?
Become the urges friend, the urge is here, and it’s going to hang out with me today, sometimes it’ll be loud, sometimes not, and just remind yourself that it won’t be there forever.
What should your attitude toward the thoughts that cause the urge be?
Practice noticing your thoughts, urges come from thoughts. Don’t judge or shame thoughts, just be curious and interested in them. Don’t try to make thoughts go away.
