where are keritonocytes found
in the epidermis
layers of the skin

corneum
Corneocytes form the outermost,
protective layer.
lucidum
Made of dead keratinocytes that are
not yet differentiated into
corneocytes. Only present in palms
and soles.
granulosum
Contains keratinocytes that form a
water barrier.
spinosum
Contains keratinocytes with long
extensions (“spines”). Important for
strength (desmosomes).
basale
Precursor keratinocyte stem cells
proliferate here. Site of light touch
sensation (Merkel cells) and melanin
synthesis (melanocytes).
dermis function
supports epidermis
cushions against injury
dermis is made up of waht
papillary dermis (superficial and thin and high surface area)
reticular dermis - deeper and thick and made of CONNECTIVE TISSUE
what is hair made up from
Made of keratin, generated from hair follicles,
stands up via erector pili muscles, and offers sun
and hypothermia protection. Only mammals have
true hair.
what do sudoriferous glands consist of
sweat glands consist of
● Eccrine glands (sweat glands) are located on
the entire body surface and are important in thermoregulation.
● Apocrine glands are located at specific sites and secrete into a hair follicle. They produce earwax (ceruminous) or milk (mammary), depending on their location.
sebaceous glands
are located over the entire
body except at the palms of hands and soles of
feet. They secrete sebum (oils + wax) into a hair
follicle.
hypodermis
The hypodermis (subcutaneous layer) is the deepest
layer and contains larger nerves and blood vessels. It
is composed of connective tissue and primarily
functions to store fat.
