Use of less lethal force policy number
104.00
Necessary Force
All force used by a Martin County sheriff sworn member whether it be less lethal or deadly will be only that force necessary to effect lawful objectives.
De-escalation
De-escalation techniques shall be utilized by sworn members whenever possible. When resistance de-escalate so must a sworn members response.
Passive resistance
A subjects, verbal and or physical resistance to comply with a sworn members lawful direction, causing the sworn member to use physical techniques to establish control.
Active resistance
A subject use of physically evasive movements directed toward the warn member such as bracing tensing, pushing, or pulling to prevent the sworn member from establishing control over the subject.
Aggressive resistance
A subjects hostile attacking movements toward a sworn member that may cause injury, but are not likely to cause death or great bodily harm to the sworn member or others.
Deadly force resistance
A subjects hostile attacking movements with or without a weapon that create a reasonable perception by the sworn member that the subject intends to cause and has the capability of causing death or great bodily harm to the sworn member or others.

Less lethal weapon, in-service training shall occur at least biennially.
CEW training shall occur annually.
