- Maintain Constant visual and verbal contact with primary spotter before backing up
- Thorough knowledge of the hand signals
- Come to immediate stop when there is no visual contact with spotter
- Give 2 warning blast of air horn prior to backing
Spotter responsibilities when backing vehicle up
- Ensure roadway is clear of any obstructions before signaling to back
- Discuss backing plan with driver before proceeding
- Equipped with and utilize a portable radio to order and direct the driver
- Don safety vests or bunker coat
- Complete 360 survey around apparatus and backing area.
- Communicate any hazards to driver
- Position selves at rear drivers side of vehicle
- Clear understanding of backing plan
- Maintain constant visual and verbal contact w/ driver in drivers side mirror
- Knowledge of hand signals
- IMMEDIATELY STOP driver when hazards become noticeable or uncertain of action, direction, or maneuvers the driver is taking
- When night backing: a flashlight shall be carried, but never directed toward drivers side view mirrors
Moving forward or backward signal
Place both hands above head with palms facing and moving in the direction of travel
Turning signal
Place both arms pointing the same direction with index fingers extended. Drivers intentions must be verbally communicated to the spotter.
Diminishing clearance signal
Toward a fixed object- directing unit to a stopping point.
Face palms forward, hands above head. Bring elbows forward and hands together as the unit begins to reach its stopping point.
Stop signal
Both arms crossed with hands in fist.
Be sure to yell stop loud enough for the driver to hear.
