Q
Tenia Solium
A
Ternia Solium= parasite transmitted by pigs
Pigs get it from eating human feces (eggs). Humans get it through a few different routes
- porcine cysticercosis
- pigs eat egs (feces)
- get cycts in muscle
- human taeniasis- eat undercooked meat
- human eats cysts in pork
- get worms in gut
- human cysticercosis- self infection (feces)
- humans eat eggs
- cysts in brain
4
Q
Giardiasis
A
Giardiasis= protozoal parasite transmitted through water
- many animals transmit the disease
- meat can also transmit it
- prevent it by filtering water
5
Q
Rabies
A
Rabies= viral zoonotic disease
- acute, progressive encephyalomyelitis
- resevoire is most mammals
- bite infects human and virus replicates and travels to CNS where it causes encephalitis
- VACCINATION is our major line of defense
6
Q
Hantavirus
A
Hantavirus= virus transmitted by rodents
- rodents are asymptomatic and transmit virus through saliva, urine and feces (airborne/inhalation) or bite
- pulmonary syndrome: fever and chills (new world strain)
- hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome: (old world strain)
- reduce rodent contact ro reduce exposure!
7
Q
Anthrax
A
Anthrax= bacterial zoonotic disease
- resevoir is soil. affects most mamalian species
- transmission to humans through air, meat, contact, even insect bites
- cattle symptoms
- bleeding everywhere
- swelling
- sudden death
8
Q
Brucellosis
A
Brucellosis= bacterial zoonitic disease
- brucella melitensis: most pathogenic for people
- mostly in mediteranean
- brucella abortus
- everywhere
- transmitted by lots of animals! (major route is drinking unpasteurized milk!)
- causes fever and lots of other stuff
9
Q
Borreliosis
A
Borreliosis= lime disease
- transmitted by ticks. spirochetes
- two types: hard ticks transmitte lyme. soft ticks transmit relapsing fever.
- bulls eye rash is key diagnostic feature
10
Q
West Nile
A
West Nile= not a virus!
- transmitted by mosquito bird mosquito life cycle
- bite humans. often doesnt develope into symptomatic infection
