Muscle- Lab Flashcards
Identify. Look for skeletal muscle in longitudinal (l.s.) and cross section (x.s.). Identify smooth muscle in vessels of different sizes.
Zoom in on artery to see smooth muscle surrounding
Tongue
Note the cross striations and multiple nuclei in a skeletal muscle fiber (cell).
Look for cells with the characteristics of cardiac muscle: cross striations, central nuclei, and intercalated discs.
Cardiac and heart muscle.
No. 23 Artery, Vein, Nerve. Look at the smooth muscle in the vessel walls. Notice the cigar-shaped nuclei of smooth muscle cells
Notice the cigar-shaped nuclei of smooth muscle cells
No. 37 Intestine: Locate smooth muscle layers.
Two very thick layers are present; their function is peristalsis.
Cells in the outer longitudinal layer are in x.s.; those in the inner circular layer are in l.s.
Use characteristics of smooth muscle in the identification: the cigar-shaped, centrally located nucleus; the cell shape is fusiform; the cytoplasm is acidophilic (stains light pink).
No. 27 Digital pad: Locate the epidermis, dermis, merocrine tubular sweat glands, and keratinocytes. Identify the epidermal strata: stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum. Identify keratohyalin granules and melanin granules. Locate the dermal papillae and epidermal pegs.
This is very thick (hairless) skin with an extensive hypodermis (subcutis) containing large masses of white adipose tissue.
Check at the edges of the thick skin (also known as glabrous) for the junction with haired skin. Note the compound hair follicles.
No. 29 Lip: Locate a sinus hair, and its sinus containing blood, its connective tissue sheath containing nerve endings, and the hair itself. Locate smaller hair follicles and their associated apocrine tubular sweat glands and sebaceous glands. Locate a hair bulb and the dermal papilla associated with it. Explore the dermis for a band of smooth muscle, the arrector pili muscle, following it to a hair follicle

No. 28 Eyelid: Locate the LARGE Meibomian (sebaceous) gland and the epidermal and dermal layers on the skin surface. One surface of this section is covered by conjunctiva, a mucous membrane.
