Q

Middle Ear

A

Middle Ear

  • Tympanic cavity- airfilled
  • Auditory ossicles- vibration of sound at tumpanic membrane transmitted through middle ear to cochlia via ossicles
    • malleus bone
      • tensor tympani m.
    • incus bone
    • stapes bone
      • stapedius m. (protects ear from loud sounds)
  • Auditory tube
    • connection between ear and mouth for equilizing

***tympanic bulla is part of skull encases inner ear

A

Pathway of sound

Outer ear

  • tympanic membrane
  • malleus, incus, stabes
  • vestibular window
  • scala vestibuli
  • helicotrema
  • scala tympani

Q

Vestibular Apparatus

A

inner ear

Vestibular Apparatus = organs of equilibrium and motion detection

  • utricle
    • contains macula utriculi
  • saccule
    • contains macula sacculi
  • semicircular ducts
    • contain crista ampullaris: detect angular acceleration and deceleration

within these structures are neuroepithelial cells

Q

Utricle and Saccule

A

inner ear: vestibular apparatus

Utricle and Saccule

  • contain neuroepithelial cells
  • movement of neuroepithelial cells displaces otoliths
  • otolith movement transmitted to macula of utricle/saccule
  • causes bending of the steriocillia (hair cells)

Q

Semicircular ducts

A

inner ear- vestibular apparatus

Semicircular ducts

  • 3 ducts detect angular acceleration in any direction
  • ducts contain the crista ampullaris which has sensory epithelim composed of sensory hair cells.
  • hair cells project into a cupula which is a gel mass that moves and impulese sent to brain

Q

Cochlear duct details

A

inner ear- Cochlea

Cochlear Duct

  • Tectorial membrane- vibrated by sound wave energy
  • Organ of corti
    • hair cells
    • phalangeal cells- support
    • pillar cells- move hair cells
  • Basilar membrane- vibrated by sound wave energy
  • Stria vascularis- produces endolymph
