Eye Flashcards
Eye General (3)
Eye General
- the eyeball (globe) is in the orbit
- the eye has a
- lense
- 3 layers
- fibrous
- vascular
- retinal
- the adnexa are accessory ocular structures
- palpebrae (eyelids)
- conjunctiva
- lacrimal apparatus

Lable

Sclera
Fibrous tunic
sclera
=posterior portion
- protexts eye and maintains shape
- insertion point for tendons and muscles
Cornea
fibrous tunic
Cornea
- anterior portion of eye
- avascular transparent and convex-concave lens
- very very innervated
- 5 layers

Identify

Note 2 and 4 are basement membranes

List factors that make cornea transparent (4)
cornea is transparent because…
- avascular
- collagen arrangement
- proteoglycans between collagen
- Na+ pumps to transport water out
Limbus
fibrous tunic
limbus
- corneoscleral junction
- area of blood vessels
- nutritive

Iris
vascular tunic
Iris
- stroma- pigmented loose connective tissue
- dilator and sphincter pupillae muscles
- posterior epithelium- some species have iridic granules
- also gives pigment
- iridocorneal angle= dreinage angle

Ciliary body
Ciliary body
- anterior expansion of the choroid at the level of the lense
- muscle applys tension to lense to allow focus
- surrounded by loose connective tissue

Identify

Aqueous humor: pathway

Choroid
Vascular Tunic
Choroid
- REMEMBER tapetum lucidum makes eyes shine

Retina (3)
Retina
- sensory/optical= contacts choroid
- non sensory/ ciliary= outer nonpigmented
- iridal= posterior pigmented
Identify

Layers

Hw does the retina work?

Path of light and perception

Photoreceptors

Conjunctiva
accessory ocular structure
conjunctiva
note palpebra= meibomian glands (sebaceous)

Accessory ocular structures

Third eyelid
accessory occular structures
third eyelid= nictitating membrane
lacrimal gland
accessory occular structure
lacrimal gland
