- Japanese ship and air building programs couldn’t replace what they needed fast enough; however, US was able to do this at a faster rate
- US came up with island hopping (general Macarthur and Admiral Nimitz)
- leapfrogging from island to island on their way to Japan, get some, bypass others (others were blockaded)
