Haitian Revolution

- Caribbean island
- French colony - sugar and coffee
- most living there were slaves working on plantations
- 500,000 slaves
- 40,000 rich and poor white
1781- Slave Revolt led by Toussaint Louverture
- very successful revolt
- many plantations were burned down
- most white were killed and social structure was eliminated with whites ruling
- slaves divided plantations into small plots (made Haiti poor due to this change)

- original name of Haiti is Sainte-Dominique
- after the successful revolt, they changed the name to Haiti (“rugged”)
- Haiti would inspire more revolts in Latin and South America
