United States - From Neutrality to Involvement
A
- Although the war begins in 1914, we get involved in 1917
- We did everything, just shy of sending troops to support Britain (supplies)
- Germany turned to its U-boats in order to win the war
- Felt they could not win unless Britain’s supply lines were cut
- Didn’t think that the US could come to Britons aide fast enough
- Therefore declared unrestricted submarine warfare (USW) in January, 1917
- Zimmerman Telegram (March 1917)
- Message sent to ambassador of Mexico by Germany to get them involved
- Britain intercepted and gave the US a copy
- US upset because of European interference – Monroe Doctrine

- Fear of losing money from European countries and markets

- prior to WWI, the U.S. was an isolationist country; however, since WWI, America would now be involved in almost all global affairs on both sides of the world

- President Woodrow Wilson had issued the Proclamation of Neutrality
- Said that U.S. would stay neutral in WWI
- But world events led the U.S. to get involved in the war
- in 1917 = the U.S. declared war on Germany
- Germans used unrestricted submarine warfare
- 1915 - a U-Boat sank an American passenger liner = the Lusitania (1200 people killed - 128 Americans)
