Tennis Court Oath

  • King called Estates General together to try and solve France’s financial problems
  • 3rd Estate wanted to accomplish something besides the financial problems
    • refuse to accept the voting conditions, the king locked the meeting house doors and told the group to return home
    • 3rd Estate refused and moved to a nearby indoor tennis court
    • vowed not to leave until was written by them and signed by the king
  • This was the first act of the French Revolution

Bastille

  • While Tennis Court Oath is being taken the people of Paris riot
  • the most hated building in Paris was the Bastille, a prison
    • it represent the symbol of the oppressive monarchy
  • the Parisians storm the Bastille and take the prison
    • they believed that weapons were stored there along with hundreds of prisoners
    • once the mob had taken the prison they found seven prisoners
    • all guarded by 100 disabled war veterans
  • this was the first violent act of the French Revolution
