The Spark that Started the War

A
  • Balkans
    • known as the “powder keg of Europe”
    • June 28, 1914 the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Francis Ferdinand, was assassinated in Sarajevo (capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina) by a Serbian nationalist
    • Austro-Hungary expects Germay (via Triple Alliance) to retaliate for them
    • War is declared by Austro-Hungary against Serbia and Germany will come to Austro-Hungary’s aid
    • However, Russia (Triple Entente) will mobilize its army to support Serbia (Slavic pride)
    • Others will follow:
  • – France, England, and others to follow (i.e. Japan, United States, etc.)
    • War has begun by 1914
  • Trench Warfare
    • the war became a stalemate particularly in the west
  • – war of attrition
  • – either side could gain a victory
  • – in the west, four years of fighting lines moved or changed less than 10 miles
  • – casualties were very heavy
  • – land between trenches was called “no man’s land”
  • – often filled with water, the holes became death holes for the heavily laden soldiers who fell in them
  • – land was a disaster area with the barbed wire, shell holes, etc.
