- established many colonies

- Knossos (Minoan life was discovered through excavation)
- art work depicts kings, rulers, religion, but Minoan was strictly for beauty (lives tied to sea, very athletic)
- ceased to exist eventually, island north of Crete had a volcanic eruption that helped wipe out the civilization

- name comes from fortress
- considered the first Greeks
- influenced by Minoans (traded a lot)
- intense competition, frequent warfare, powerful kings
- built grate monuments (Lions Gate)

- war played a part in the downfall. drought, famine
