1853 - Commodore Perry sails his ships into the Tokyo bay and demands that Japan open up trade with the United States
A
- Japan does, but from a unique perspective: they embrace Westernization!
- so state sponsored industrialization begins in Japan
- emperor becomes powerful again

shogun
A
- shogun had been the real power in Japan for several hundred years
- during this time Japan had isolated itself from the world
- once year a ship, the Black Ship, was allowed into Japan to trade (usually silk)
- emperor was still on the throne but no power

Perry 1850’s
A
- sent with a letter asking for a commercial treaty from Millard Fillmore
- US sailors, merchantmen, had been ship wrecked off the Japanese coast and been harshly treated or killed
- delivered the message along with some gifts and left for one year
- upon his return an exclusive treaty was signed
- Perry had used a show of force to impress the Japanese and they saw how far behind the world they were

end of the shogun
A
- some of the more moderate, liberal samurai felt that Japan needed to modernize
- they rebelled against the shogun, overthrew him and reestablished the emperor to his rightful place with the Meiji Restoration 1867
- this began an unbelievable program of modernization and westernization, industrialization
- by 1905 Japan had caught up with some of the western nations, at least Russia

- as a result of the sphere of influence the US had been effectively shut out
- sec. of state Hay sent a note to European nations and Japan stating:
- everyone should and could trade in China anywhere
- no nation would claim exclusive trading rights
- no nation wanted to or intended to observe the policy but it went into effect
- result was open and equal trading most of the time
