- senate ran the Roman republic
- powerful military before empire, grew and expanded
- what caused Roman Republic to grow was war with Carthage (Punic War)
- government became very unstable after Punic Wars (troops became loyal to generals, and they fought each other)
- Julius Caesar became dictator for life of Rome (eventually executed)
- Octavius took control of Roman Republic (created empire, gave himself name, Augustus Caesar)
- slavery (allowed Romans to be creative)
- Silk Road, connected to Han China
- traded precious metals for silk, religions, gems, etc.

- second wreaked havoc in Rome
- Scipio
- Hannibal against Scipio and Carthage, brought elephants
- Carthage was completely destroyed (earth was salted so nothing would grow)
