Week 9 - Lesson 1 (Part 3) Flashcards
What is the femoral vein a continuation of?
The popliteal vein
Where does the femoral vein course?
Along the medial aspect of thigh until it reaches the level of the inguinal canal
How many valves does the femoral vein contain?
3-6
What occasionally happens to the femoral vein?
It gets duplicated
What makes up the common femoral vein?
- Deep femoral vein
2. Femoral vein
Where does the common femoral vein lay compared to its matching artery?
More medial within the Scarpa’s triangle
Is the common femoral vein considered a longer or shorter vessel?
Shorter
How many valves does the common femoral vein have?
3-5
What happens at the level of the groin crease?
The superficial-great saphenous vein dumps into it
- anteromedially
Where is the Scarpas triangle?
Upper 2/3rds of the thigh
- proximal
- medial
What is the external iliac vein a continuation of?
The common femoral vein
How many valves does the external iliac vein have?
1
What is a major tributary draining the pelvic viscera?
The internal iliac vein
What does the internal iliac vein converge with to form the IVC?
With the contralateral common iliac vein
- right and left iliac veins
What are the superficial veins of the lower extremities? (2)
- Greater saphenous vein
2. Lesser saphenous vein
What is the longest vein?
The great saphenous vein
Where does the great saphenous vein extend from?
The anterior aspect of the medial malleolus upwards to the groin crease
Where does the great saphenous vein dump into?
The common femoral vein
- anteromedially
What does the great saphenous vein drain?
Drains blood from the superficial tissues (skin and fat) into the deep system
What is another term for the great saphenous vein? (2)
- Greater saphenous vein
2. Long saphenous vein
Where does the small saphenous vein extend from and run?
- The posterior aspect of the lateral malleolus
2. Runs up the center of the calf
Where does the small saphenous vein dump?
Into the popliteal vein at the popliteal fossa crease level
What happens occasionally to the small saphenous vein?
The SSV is connected to the popliteal vein by a trunk and continues high into the thigh
What does the SSV drain?
Superficial tissues
What happens when the SSV does not dump into the popliteal vein? (2)
- It may continue up the posterior part of the leg and dump into GSV
- medial thigh
- wraps around - The SSV may continue up the thigh into the deep system at the femoral vein
What system has the greatest pressure?
In the superficial system
How does blood flow through the systems?
From the superficial to deep system
- high pressure to low pressure
Perforators
Are short vessels that connect the 2 systems and have valves conducting the flow
What is a term for backwards flow?
Reflux
What is reflux caused by?
Broken/damaged valves
- occurs anywhere you have a valve you can have insufficiency
