What testicular factors do you need to consider?
- Testis size
- Testes tone
- Number of functional testes
How would you measure testicular width?
- callipers or ultrasound
How much sperm does a ‘normal stallion’ produce?
100-500 million for optimal fertility
What are the normal parameters for ejacultation?
obtain an erection 1-2 minutes, ejaculate within 1-2 mounts
How would you collect and evaluate semen?
Collect 2 ejaculates 1 hour apart
use an artificial vagina
maintain semen at 34-37
protect from light and temperature extremes
What might be a scrotum abnormality?
- Inflammation increases temp
approx 2 months after resolution to produce normal ejaculate
What is hydrocele?
- collection of serous fluid between visceral and parieta vaginal tunics
usually bilateral
scrotum enlarged but not painful
treatment- underlying cause, remove affected testicle
What is orchitis?
- Hot, painful testes
- either traumatic, bacterial or viral
How would you treat orchitis?
Cryotherapy, NSAIDS, anti-microbials, sexual rest
How common is accesory cell infection?
- uncbacterommon
- reluctant to ejaculate due to pain
- ejaculate contains bacteria and inflammatory cells
What is EVA?
- Notifiable disease
- Caused by Equine Arteritis Virus
- Vaccine must be kept up once started
How would you diagnose EVA?
lab testing// PCR
How often should the mare be covered?
- Mare covered once per oestrus less than 24 hours before ovulation
- Matings should be equally distributed throughout the day
