Week 4- Management of seizures Flashcards
What does paroxysmal mean?
Sudden or intense recurrence of symptoms such as seizures
What is a temporal lobe seizure?
– focal seizures with orofacial automatisms
What is the definition of a movement disorder?
Group of neurological conditions characterised by abnormal movements that
commonly arise from an altered function in the basal nuclei or their connections
What are the two types of paroxysmal dyskinesia?
- Breed associated
- Gluten Sensitivity
How might you treat paroxysmal dyskinesia?
- Diet trial (hypoallergenic / gluten free)
- Levetiracetam and other anti-epilepsy drugs?
- Acetazolamide (reduces synaptic pH)
- Fluoxetine
- Behavioural modification to reduce anxiety
What is an idiopathic head tremor?
involuntary head movements that are benign and have no known cause
common in english bulldogs
What is screw tail/ tail fold intertrigo?
congenital deformity in dogs that causes the tail to turn or twist
What is parainsomnia
a sleep disorder that involves abnormal behaviors, movements, or emotions that occur during sleep or when waking up
What is post distemper virus encephalitis?
a neurological condition that can occur in young dogs after being vaccinated against canine distemper.
What is laforas disease?
a rare, inherited, and fatal form of epilepsy that causes seizures and cognitive decline
What are the symptoms of laforas disease?
Reflex myoclonus
* Generalised seizures
* Suspected hallucinations with
frightening context (occipital
seizures)
* Cerebellar ataxia & tremor
* Cognitive decline
What are the 6 main aetiologies of myclonus?
- Physiological
- Essential/ Idiopathic
- Epileptic
- Secondary
- Metabolic
- Toxic
How might you diagnose myclonus?
Observation of episodes
* Investigation as for epilepsy
* Reactive causes
* Toxins / drugs
* CNS causes
* Investigate triggers
* Distemper = poor prognosis
How might you treat canine distemper?
May not be necessary
* Levetiracetam
* 10-20mg/kg BID /TID/QID (or well within
human serum concentration)
* Melatonin (Hypnic)
* 3-9mg per night
What is cataplexy?
Sudden bilateral loss of voluntary muscular
tone triggered by strong emotional factors
How might you treat cataplexy?
Serotonin reuptake inhibitor Clomipramine
* Tryptophan supplement during stressful
times
* Managem
what is fly-catching disorder?
a rare condition that causes dogs to bite or lick the air, or jump for no reason
How might you treat fly-catching disorder?
- Management gastrointestinal disease
- SSRI – fluoxetine
- (anti-epilepsy drugs e.g. phenobarbital – short
term effect only
