Week 5 MS Infectious Disease - Debiel Flashcards
Diagnosis? Rapid Onset High fever High HR Altered mental status LOW BP High CRP, ESR, WBC (banded neutrophils)
Necrotizing fasciitis
What does the WBC measure?
Measure the number of leucocytes per MILLILITER of blood
-Normal = 4,500 - 11,000
What is ESR?
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) = rate at which red blood cells precipitate in a period of 1 hour when anti-coagulated blood is allowed to stand
- seen in osteomyleitis
What is C-reactive protein?
- produced by liver
- normal present in circulation at low levels
- promotes immune system through
- COMPLEMENT CASCADE
What organisms can cause necrotizing fasciitis?
Strep pyogenes
Clostridium perfringens
Organism? Gram + Cocci Catalase - B-hemolytic
Strep. Pyogenes
Organism? Gram + Bacili Spore forming Obligate anaerobe Non-motile
Clostridium perfringens
Diagnosis?
Rapid onset
Pain
restricted range of motion
Acute infectious Arthritis
What organisms can cause Acute infectious Arthritis?
Staph. Aureus.
N. gonorrhoeae
Organism? Gram - Diplococci Oxidase + Only glucose oxidizer
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Diagnosis? Fever High HR Overlying skin warm & red with multiple necrotic-appearing lesions High ESR High CRP High WBC (some bands)
Osteomyelitis
What organisms can cause osteomyelitis?
Staph. Aureus (most common) Salmonella typhii (sickle cella anemia) Pasteurella muitocida (cat bites)
Organism? Gram - Bacilli Lactose non-fermenter Oxidase - Produces H2S Motile
Salmonella typhii
Organism? Gram - Coccobacilli Oxidase + Catalase +
Pasteurella multocida
