Week 1 Dermatomes, Myotomes, Joints- Severson Flashcards

1
Q

Define dermatome and myotome

A
Dermatome = unilateral area of skin innervated by the nerve fibers of a single nerve that originates from a single cord segment
Myotome = spinal nerves innervating groups of muscles

17
Q

Synarthroses

A

(together joints) bones are separated by connective tissue which prevents limited movement

18
Q

Syndesmosis

A

type of synarthroses - bones are joined by intervening fibrous tissue
ex: membrane between radius and ulna and joints between skull bones

19
Q

Synchondrosis

A

type of synarthroses- two bones are separated from each other by cartilage which permits very limited movement

Ex: Epiphyseal plate, intervertebral disc, and symphysis

20
Q

Synostosis

A

type of synarthroses- two bones are joined together by bone

Ex: frontal bone, epiphyseal plate

21
Q

Diarthroses/ Synovial Joints have what common features?

A
  • Synovial space: an articular cavity or discontinuity between bones
  • synovial fluid
  • synovial membrane
  • Articular surface (smooth surfaces for articulation)
22
Q

What produces synovial fluid?

A

serous membrane

23
Q

What is a bursae?

A

closed scas or cavities of synovial membrane usually separating bone from overlying tendon of muscle filled with synovial fluid.

  • Bursae reduce friction between structures
  • communicate with synovial cavity of adjacent joint
24
Q

Arthritis
Synoyitis
Bursitis

A
Arthritis = inflammation of join
Synoyitis = inflammation of the synovial membrane of joint
Bursitis = inflammation of a bursa
25
Q

hinge joints

A

permit flexion and extension only
