Waterlogging Of Soil Flashcards

1
Q

When is soil considered to be water logged?

A

When pore spaces In soil are occupied by water not air - insufficient amount of oxygen for plants to respire

Anaerobic conditions

Different plants need different levels of oxygen so no universal level fo oxygen

Q

What will lack of oxygen do to a plant?

A

Lack of oxygen in root zone of plants causes their root tissues to decompose.
Plants growth / development is stalled.

If anaerobic conditions still continue plant can die.

Q

Why are waterlogged conditions not that worst ??

A

Don’t last that long for plant to die.

Plants recommence respiring after water logged event has passed.
As long as soil conditions are moist

Happens when precipitation, irrigation water or river flood water exceed combination of evapotranspiration and percolation so water stays on surface.

Q

Caused when rate of rising ground water is not matched by the rate of evapotranspiration.

Natural rise in groundwater
