What is the epidemiological transition theory ?
Over time infectious diseases like influenza / smallpox / malaria / TB are replaced by chronic and degenerative diseases like heart diseases and dementia

2000-2012 numbers dying from infectious diseases declined while those dying from chronic diseases increased

Why does this shift occur ?

What do some people argue however ?
Whether the transition has actually occurred.
They argue that increase in chronic diseases may be an illusion resulting from more advanced medical technologies being able to diagnose diseases previously we weren’t - gives appearance of emergency of new chronic diseases
What will happen by 2020?
Chronic diseases such as depression/ heart disease will replace traditional infectious diseases/ malnutrition as the leading cause of disability and premature death.
