Food Production Flashcards
What are the 2 key variables depending upon food produce?
Climate - temp/ growing season/ water availability
Soils
Define agricultural productivity
Ratio of agricultural outputs to agriculture inputs
Define agriculture
Practice of farming including cultivation of soils for growing crops and rearing of animals to provide food/ wool
Food Production in 1960s
Global food supplies for human stood at only 2,300 calories per person per day.
This was unevenly distributed.
High income countries average was 3,030 calories per day.
Low income countries it was 2,000 - chronic under nourishment
Food Production in 2010
Despite fact world pop had increased by almost 2 and half times, the world could produce enough food to provide every person with 2,800 calories per day - everyone had enough food.
But food production and availability was uneven - 800 million under nurished.
Drop from 50-20%
How did global food production increase ?
Technologies called the green revolution - increased use of new/ high yielding crops varieties/ technologies.
Irrigation/ fertiliser.
Global trade 1970s net import of Cereals in low income countries tripled from 20 million
What is happening in low income counties
Production & consumption of main agriculture products have been growing at much higher rates than in higher income counties. This is due to; Pop growth rates. Higher wealth. Greater responsiveness
What is happening in HIC countries
Slower growth of demand had occurred because high per capita consumption and slow growth of population have had dampening effect on growth
Example of counties with high growth rate s
China
Brazil
Examples of counties with low growth rates
North America
Europe
Russia
Production declined
