Demographic Transition Model Flashcards
What does a model provide ?
A structure which is representative of the characteristics , processes and relationships that occur in real world
What is the dtm based on ?
Changes in births rates and dead rates in industrialised countries since the start of the industrial revolution.
High BRs and high DRs to low as country develops from lic to HIC
Rate will change from one country to another
Which stage has the most rapid natural increase ?
Stage 2 / 3
When birth rate is still high but death rate has declined
When does natural population growth decline ?
Later part of stage 3 and 4
Less difference between birth and death rates so smaller natural increase.
Trend of the model
High birth rates/ death rates
To low birth rates / death rates
As the country develops socio economically from pre industrial economy To an industrialised economic system.
When is there an natural increase ?
2
And Earle stage 3
When is there an natural decrease ?
Later part of stage 3
4
3 strengths of the model
Easily/ universally applied.
Compare stages of demographic development
Made future predictions
Limitations of model
Doesn’t account for migration and it’s impact on birth rate.
Government policies which indulge birth rates.
Wars/conflict impacting death.
Diseases on death rate .
Environmental limitations - natural disasters/ harsh climatic conditions
