Uganda/burkino Faso - Improving Post Harvist Flashcards
What was done in 2013/2014?
World food progrMme carried out research trials in Uganda and hurling faso which aimed to;
• reduce post harvest losses by 70%
•increase household food security/ nutrition
• increase ability of small holder farmers and small - mediate scale trader to link to largest to look for high quality produce - improve FS
How was improving post harvest practices done ?
Training
Equipping
Filed support
Over 400 low income farmers and families
The challenges and losses of harvested crops
When crops ripen they need to be looked after by drying/ threshing/ storing / transportation/ marketing .
If not then the agriculture will be exposed to contamination of chemicals/ micro organisms
Meaning food losses
What is also if we don’t look after post harvesting
Health rises.
Contamination / mould growth/ food poisoning.
Aflatoxins
Poisons produced by a fungus in maize.
It can developed when in contain with soul dueinf threshing/ frying or after grain has been placed in storage ( pest infestation)
Become epidemic in east Africa
The solutions to this
Land preparation / correct timing of planting/ harvesting to reduce plants susceptibility to aflatoxins.
Dry plants properly to reduce change of fungal growth - low humidity
Solarisation - to kill insect pests
Training in harvesting/ drying/ thresholdinf
Storage units
Training in harvesting
Optimum time.
Avoid losses
Understand impact of weather - rain causes dampening and leads to mould / alflatoxin
Training in drying
Reduce moisture so no mould can grow
No contact with soil during drying
Training in threshold
Avoid damages to grain druinf threshing
