What does each clause contain?
a subject and a predicate or a nonfinite verbal form (infinitive or participle)
What is a paratactic structure?
compound sentence where tow or more clauses are connected in a coordinate relation
What is a hypotactic structure?
complex sentence where one or more clauses are subordinate to another clause

- an independent clause not introduced by a conjunctive word or phrase

- contains a verb in the indicative mood
- refers to a specific individual or group, or specific fact, event, or action
- refers back to its antecedent
What is contained in an indefinite relative clause?
- contains a verb in the subjunctive mood plus the particle ἂν (or ἐάν)
- refers to an unspecified individual or group, or event or action
- no antecedent
How do you classify a dependent clause?
- identify the structural form (infinitival, participial, conjunctive, relative)
- Identify the syntactical function of the clause by classifying the key structural markers in the clause (the infinitive, participle, conjunction, or relative pronoun)
How do you identify the syntactical function of the clause?
- identify the main functional category (substantival, adjectival, or adverbial)
- identify the appropriate functional subcategory under the main category (e.g. under adverbial is it cause, condition, purpose, result, time, etc.)
