Q

Whose responsibility is it to make it known that the FO doesn’t have 100hrs in type, and is subject to restrictions?

A

10.40 pg. 4 - The FO is responsible for letting the captain know if they don’t have 100hrs in type at Frontier Airlines

25
Q

When must the captain make all takeoffs and landings when the FO has less than 100hrs at Frontier Airlines, in that type of aircraft?

A

10.40 pg. 4

When the FO has less than 100hrs in type, the Captain must make all takeoffs and landings in the following circumstances:

-The RVR for the runway to be used is less than 4000’
-The prevailing visibility is at or below 3/4sm
-The runway is contaminated (water, snow, slush, etc. that may adversely affect performance)
-Braking action is less than good
-Crosswind component exceeds 15 knots
-Windshear is reported in the vicinity
-At “special airports”
-Whenever the captain deems it prudent

26
Q

When is it recommended that the captain perform all takeoffs?

A

10.40 pg. 4 - When the visibility is at or below 1/2sm or RVR 1800

27
Q

If the captain has less than 100hrs of time as PIC in a particular aircraft type (not including IOE), what must be applied to each instrument approach?

A

10.40 pg. 5

-Increase the DA or MDA by 100’ and,
-Increase the visibility by 1/2sm or RVR equivalent

Note: to convert the RVR equivalent, use table 10.40.2

28
Q

Can high minimums captains perform CAT III approaches?

A

10.40 pg. 6 - No

29
Q

In general terms, what is exemption 21515?

A

10.40 pg. 6 - It’s an exemption that allows a high minimums captain (one with less than 100hrs of PIC time at Frontier Airlines, in that type of aircraft, not including OE) to be dispatch and land at an airport with weather lower than the normal minimums would permit.

30
Q

What can be done if as a high minimums captain, you realize after adding the required additional margin to your approach minimums (100’ and 1/2sm) that you will not be able to begin an approach?

A

10.40 pg. 6 - You may be able to use FAA exemption 21515, which allows high minimums captains to execute CAT I or Cat II ILS approaches down to minimums under certain circumstances, without adding the normally required 100’ and 1/2sm to the minimums.

Note: It’s unclear if you need approval from dispatch in order to use this exemption or if it’s just at the captains discretion. I’ll try and follow up.

31
Q

What two procedures are allowed under exemption 21515?

A

10.40 pg. 6

Procedure A:
-Execute a CAT I approach down to the published DA.
-Autopilot must be used to the DA and for any missed approach. Aircraft must be capable of a coupled approach.
-Captain or First Officer must have atleast 75 hours of PIC or SIC in the aircraft.
-If RVR/VIS is less than 3/4sm or 4000 RVR, max crosswind is 15 knots and braking action must be good or better

Procedure B:
-Execute a CAT II approach down to DH
-Aircraft must be autolanded
-PIC must have at least 300 hours as PIC or SIC in turbojet airplanes
-Aircraft must be CAT II autoland capable
-Captain or First Officer must have at least 75 hours of PIC or SIC in the aircraft type
-Flown as a CAT II autoland or missed approach

32
Q

When is it considered night for operational purposes?

A

10.40 pg. 7 - From the end of evening civil twilight until the beginning of morning civil twilight

33
Q

If any personal information changes, e.g. name, address, telephone number, dependents, etc. you are expected to update that info within how many business days?

A

10.40 pg. 7

34
Q

How long do you have to notify the FAA after a change of address?

A

10.40 pg. 8 - You have to notify the FAA through the airman registry within 30 days of the change of address.

35
Q

What does acclimated mean?

A

10.50 pg. 1 - A condition in which the crew member has been in a theater for 72 hours or has been given atleast 36 consecutive hours free from duty in theater.

36
Q

Is a deadhead leg considered a segment for determining your maximum flight duty period (FDP)? Is a deadhead considered rest or duty? And does time on a deadhead leg count against the flight duty period?

A

10.50 pg. 1

-A deadhead leg is NOT considered a leg for the purposes of determining the length of your maximum duty period
-A deadhead leg is considered duty and NOT rest
-Even though a deadhead leg is considered duty and NOT rest, a deadhead leg only counts toward your flight duty period at the beginning or somewhere in the middle of your pairing. A deadhead leg at the end of your day does NOT count towards your FDP.

Note: Even though a deadhead leg at the end of your duty day does not count against your FDP, our CBA says a pilot cannot be required to deadhead outside of your FDP limits. So if they try to deadhead you home after timing out for the day, you can refuse and request a hotel, as long as that deadhead leg would operate outside of your original FDP.

37
Q

Is long call reserve considered duty? Is short call considered duty?

A

10.50 pg. 1 - Long call is NOT considered duty, it is considered rest. Short call and all other required airline activities, e.g. training, administrative work, deadheading, etc. is considered duty.

38
Q

What is flight time according to 14 CFR 1.1?

A

10.50 pg. 1 - Pilot time that commences when an aircraft moves under its own power for the purpose of flight and ends when the aircraft comes to ret after landing.

Note: This definition means that FAA flight time is different than block time. We “block out” when the doors are closed and the parking brake is released. Hence, the time we take while being pushed back, and starting the engines is NOT considered flight time per the FAA. So you could in theory exceed the 8 or 9 hour flight time limits according to BLOCK times, without actually exceeding the FAA limits per their definition.

39
Q

What’s a physiological nights rest?

A

10.50 pg. 2 - A 10hr rest period that includes the hours of 0100 and 0700 at the crew members home base, or if acclimated to a different theater, than the rest encompasses the hours of 0100 to 0700 at the acclimated location.

40
Q

What is split duty?

A

10.50 pg. 2 - A flight duty period that has a scheduled break in duty that is less than a required rest period

41
Q

What’s a theater?

A

10.50 pg. 2 - A geographical area in which the distance between the crew members flight duty departure point and arrival point differs by no more than 60 degrees longitude.

42
Q

What is the window of circadian low?

A

10.50 pg .2 - A period of maximum sleepiness that occurs between 0200 and 0559 during a physiological night

43
Q

Does a diversion count as a segment for calculating your maximum flight duty period (FDP)?

A

10.50 pg. 3 - No. Your maximum FDP is based on SCHEDULED flight segments

44
Q

Are any Frontier trips built in such a manner as to leave your acclimated theater?

A

10.50 pg. 4 - No. You can always assume that your acclimated theater is your home base when calculating FDP and flight time limits.

45
Q

When are the times for standard PA’s?

A

10.60 pg 3-5

-Before pushback
-Reaching cruising altitude
-Prior to descent
-Irregular operations

46
Q

What is the size limit for back-up lithium batteries on board an aircraft per DOT regulation?

A

10.70 pg. 2 - 300 watt-hours (Wh). You can calculate the size by taking the milliamp-hour capacity of the charger, dividing by 1000, and multiplying by the voltage (usually around 12V)

47
Q

What’s the recommended temperature range for iPad operation?

A

10.70 pg. 3 - 32º-95ºF

48
Q

What should be done regarding your electronic flight bag (EFB) if the cockpit temperature exceeds 95ºF?

A

10.70 pg. 3 - Either cool the cockpit or remove the EFB from the cockpit. Temperatures exceeding 95ºF can harm the EFB.

49
Q

What should be done if a required application on your EFB fails to function after an update?

A

10.70 pg. 3 - There are contingency procedures described in FOM Vol 1, 10.70 describing what to do in each scenario.

50
Q

51
Q

Will Lido mPilot automatically update over cellular connections?

A

10.70 pg. 7 - NO

52
Q

How can you download any manuals into a regular PDF form for offline use?

A

10.70 pg. 9 - You can download the manuals from the Frontier Flight ops website

53
Q

If you lose your EFB, or for whatever reason you don’t have yours, can you borrow one from a fellow pilot?

A

10.70 pg. 14 - Yes, but the company will not accept liability for the loss or damage of a borrowed EFB device

54
Q

What can you do if you can’t obtain a backup EFB prior to departure?

A

10.70 pg. 15 - The total EFB failure process should be followed

55
Q

What should you do if one of the pilots EFB’s fails prior to departure?

A

10.70 pg. 15 - Taxi back to the gate to obtain a replacement EFB or paper backups.

56
Q

Where can you find the total EFB failure process?

A

In FOM Vol 1, 10.70 pg. 16. The procedure essentially entails obtaining all required paper charts in order to safely carry out the flight, as well as obtaining a letter of authorization from dispatch.

57
Q

Do WiFi only iPads have an internal GPS chip?

A

10.70 pg. 18 - No

58
Q

Can an external GPS antenna (bad elf, sentry, etc.) be used in the flight deck?

A

10.70 pg. 19 - Yes. But it must be placed someplace where it will not interfere with the controls, nor prohibit the opening of emergency egress windows.
